순항, 순탄함

우리나라 말과 다른 특이한 점은, 긍정문에 쓰면 좀 어색한 표현이라는것이다.

예를들어 My life has been smooth sailing.이렇게 잘 안쓰고, "평탄하지 않았다" 혹은 대조적으로 "예전에는 우여곡절이 많았는데 요즘은 순항중이다" 이렇게 쓴다는걸 기억해야 한다.

 

It definitely wasn't smooth sailing most of the time.

 

It hasn't all been smooth sailing, but we make it work.

 

 

 

keep one's options open

가능성을 열어두다.

좋은 말 같지만, 어쩔때는 부정적인 의미로 받아들여지기도 한다. 예를들어 이성간의 관계에서 keep my options open이라고 하면 아직 연인을 정하지 않고 계속 탐색중이라는 뜻이거나 누군가를 만나고 있지만 충실하지 않고(not committed to one person) 다른 사람을 만날 가능성을 열어둔다는 뜻이 된다. 

 

If anything, we learned to keep our options open and be flexible.

오히려 선택의 여지를 열어두고 융통성 갖는법을 배웠지.

상대방의 말이나 상황에 반대되는 결론을 내릴때 쓴다.

예를 들어,  친구들과 같이 파티 준비를 했는데 한 친구가 늦게 와서 음식에 불평을 한다고 했을때, if anything, you should be thankful. 과 같이 "불평할게 아니고 오히려 고마워해야지 이친구야" 라고 if anything을 쓴다고 한다.
