do without

~없이 지내다. 완벽한 상황은 아니지만 ~ 없이도 그럭저럭 버틴다는 뜻입니다. 

 

A: Oh, no! We're out of ice cream.

B: I think you can do without it for one night, Trevor.

아, 안돼! 아이스크림이 다떨어졌어.

트레버, 하룻밤은 없어도 될거 같은데.

 

When we were younger, we learned how to do without when it came to things like designer clothes.

우리는 어렸을때, 명품옷 같은 것들 없이 지내는 법을 배웠다.

 

I had to do without breakfast today because I overslept.

오늘은 늦잠을 자서 아침을 안먹고 견뎌야 했다.

 

 

 

leave ... behind

~를 두고 가다. 고의일수도 있고 실수일수도 있습니다. 

 

A: What's wrong, little boy? Why are you crying?

B: I was on a school trip and the bus left me behind.

꼬마야 왜그래? 왜 울고 있니?

수학여행 중인데 버스가 저를 두고 떠났어요.

 

The park manager warned us not to leave any trash behind at the campground.

공원 관리자가 우리에게 캠핑장에 쓰레기를 두고 가지 말라고 경고했다.

 

Many people left their pets behind when they evacuated the coastal town.

많은 사람들이 해안 마을에서 대피하면서 애완동물을 두고 떠났다.

 

 

 

make sense

이해가 된다, 말이된다

 

A: I checked the math three times, so it has to be right.

B: The numbers don't make sense. How can our profits be higher than our sales?

계산을 세번이나 확인했으니 맞을 거예요.

숫자가 말이 안돼요. 수익이 매출보다 어떻게 높을수 가 있죠?

 

People don't just disappear. That doesn't make sense.

사람들이 그냥 사라지지 않아요. 그건 말이 안돼요.

 

 

 

I still want to ...

그래도 ... 하고 싶어요.

still 은 여전히 , 아직 이라는 뜻인데, '그래도'라는 의미도 있습니다. 약간 징징거리는 뉘앙스가 담겨 있어요. 

 

I still want to go to Norway and see the Northern Lights.

나는 그래도 노르웨이에 가서 북극광을 보고 싶어요.

 

I still want to get my master's degree.

나는 여전히 석사 학위를받고 싶어요.
