break away

when something is being held in place, tied in place and then it gets separated.
한자리에 고정되어(묶여) 있던것이 분리되어 나갈때

 

 

The boat may break away from the dock in the storm.

그 배는 태풍오면 갑판에서 떨어져 나갈지도 몰라.

 

A person who is being held can break away.
사람한테도 같은 의미로 쓴다

The girl broke away from her father and jumped into the pool

 

also mean to move away from a group
그룹(단체)에서 분리되어 멀어지다

She has broken away from the pack and is now in the lead

마라톤 경기에서 다른사람들을 제치고 혼자 선두로 치고 나오는 상황을 break away라고 할수 있다.

차, 세탁기 같은 기계가 고장나다, 기능을 제대로 하지 않다

My car broke down on a long road trip.

 

좀더 추상적인 의미로 결혼이나 협상이 결렬되다, 깨지다를 의미하기도 한다

Their marriage broke down after the kids left the house.

 

The negotiations broke down quickly.

 

break down and cry 라는 표현도 있다. 감정에 복받혀서 조절이 안되는상황이다

I just broke down and cried when I saw the violence on TV.

 

dismantle 해체하다

Break down the cardboard boxes before putting them in the recycling bin.

종이상자를 해체해서 재활용 통에 넣어라.

 

어떤걸을 작은 부분으로 나누다

I'm going to break down the old shed in my yard.

정신 착란. 지속되는 문제는 아니지만, 스트레스나 우울증 불안등으로 사람이 정신적으로 제대로 기능할수 없는 어떤 사건.

emotional breakdown, nervous breakdown 등 정신적으로  쇠약한 상태를 주로 의미한다.
