if 와 같은 의미이지만 좀 딱딱한 표현이다. 가까운 사람끼리 일상적인 대화를 할때는 잘 쓰지 않는다. 잘 쓰는 상황을 예로들면 기내에서 승무원의 안내방송에 잘 등장한다. 재난 영화나 첩보 영화 등에서 '내가 성공하지 못하면...' (In the event that I don't make it...) 같이 장엄하게 선언하는듯한 상황에 잘 쓰인다.
