far-flung 

먼, 멀리 떨어진

물리적인 거리보다는 "좀처럼 쉽게 가기 힘든", "사람들이 잘 모르는" 곳이라는 의미가 있습니다. 관광지를 예로 들자면 아무리 멀어도 큰공항이 있는 대도시는 far-flung이라고 하지 않죠.

무언가가 매우 많다는 뜻입니다. 

 

The Virginia and Washington, D.C. region is covered with historical sites, wineries, and antique shops.

버지니아와 워싱턴 디시 지역은 유적지와 포도주 양조장, 골동품 가게들로 가득해.

 

A: What did you think of the beach?

B: It could have been nice, but it was covered with thousands of tents.

해변은 어땠어?

좋았을 수도 있었는데 수천개의 텐트로 덮혀있었어.

 

After a night in the jungle, I was covered with mosquito bites.

정글에서 하루밤을 보낸뒤 나는 모기물린 자국으로 뒤덮혀 있었다.

 

 

In one's own backyard

집 가까이에서

실제 내 뒷마당이라는 뜻이 아니고 자신의 집에 아주 가까운 곳이라는 뜻입니다.

 

It's crazy that there's so much to see in our own backyard and we've barely explored any of it.

우리집 가까이에 그렇게 볼것이 많은데 거의 아무데도 가보지 못했다는건 말도 안돼.

 

A: I heard they're going to build a couple of windmills in town.

B: I don't want something so loud and ugly in my own backyard.

마을에 풍차를 몇개 지을 거라고 들었어.

우리동네에 그렇게 시끄럽고 추한게 생기는건 싫은데.

 

I never knew there were so many local honey farmers right in my own backyard.

바로 우리집 근처에 이렇게 많은 지역 양봉업자들이 있었는줄 몰랐어.

학생들이 학교를 쉬는 기간을 말합니다.
