대표적으로 칼로리를 소모한다, 칼로리를 연소시킨다에 많이쓴다.
그외에 요리할때 뜨거운 팬에 알콜을 부어 알콜성분을 날려버린다(burn off )는 뜻으로도 쓰고, 사마귀(wart)를 레이저등으로 태워 제거할때도 burn off 라고 하기도 한다.
바다에서 석유 시추할때도 불이 타오르는 장면을 볼수 있는데 이 과정도 burn off the oil라고 할수 있다.
